When One Random Thought Wrecks Your Whole Morning

"Our minds can be crafty little things. They will try to keep us comfortable, even when comfort is keeping us stuck."

A gentle reflection on anxiety, grief, and learning to listen to yourself

Do you ever have one of those moments where anxiety comes on all of a sudden, and all because of one little passing thought? It can be the most random thing, and yet somehow it lands right in the middle of your chest and steals your breath, makes your body go rigid, and then emotion floods your whole being.

Just the other morning, I woke up with the thought: everyone I grew up with and felt safe with is gone. That one thought hit me so hard. I immediately felt sad, vulnerable, and full of anxiety. It does not happen all the time, thank goodness, but when it does, it feels like it knocks the wind right out of me. It catches me off guard every single time, and usually it starts with something strangely random.

The truth is, I know loss is a part of life. We are born, we grow up, we leave home, we build families of our own, we raise children, we care for the people who cared for us, and eventually we say goodbye. I understand that in my head. I was raised knowing that this is the natural cycle of life. But knowing that does not make it hurt any less when the people who made you feel safe are no longer here.

So when these moments happen, I have learned not to run from them right away. I try to pause and ask myself: Why am I having this thought? What brought it to the front of my mind? Why does it feel so heavy right now? Sometimes just sitting with the thought for a minute and naming what it is can tell you a whole lot. It gives you the chance to figure out whether something in you still needs healing, or whether you have stumbled onto an insecurity you did not even realize was there.

For me, I think this particular wave of anxiety was likely stirred up by a dream. But I also know it is not always that simple. Sometimes you have to sit with a feeling a little longer. Sometimes you have to journal it out, pray through it, meditate on it or gently pull the truth up from somewhere deep inside yourself. Our minds can be crafty little things. They will try to keep us comfortable, even when comfort is keeping us stuck. They will try to keep us safe, even when that so-called safety is quietly feeding our fear.

That is why I believe it matters to pay attention to the thoughts that shake us. Not every anxious thought means something deep is wrong, but sometimes it is pointing toward grief, fear, loneliness, or an old wound that still needs tenderness. The more I learn to slow down and ask questions instead of spiraling, the more I understand myself. And honestly, that kind of awareness has been one of the most helpful tools in my healing.

A Few Things That Help Me

When my thoughts feel tangled up, a few simple things tend to help. A good journal is usually the first thing I reach for, because writing things out helps me get honest about what I am feeling. Sometimes a thoughtful book about grief and anxiety helps me put words to things I could not explain on my own. I also love having a calming cup of tea nearby or a cozy blanket wrapped around me while I sit and sort through what is going on inside. None of these things fix everything, of course, but they can make the hard moments feel a little softer and a little more manageable.

Sometimes they are simply asking to be noticed. And sometimes healing begins the moment you stop pushing the feeling away and start listening to what it may be trying to tell you.
